What is a Momento Pro Project?

Project is the term we use to describe any product you can design in the Momento Pro software i.e. a photobook, a diary, a calendar or a card.

What is the process for designing and ordering a product?

Using the Momento Pro service is this easy:

  1. Step 1: Download our free design software (PC & Mac)
  2. Step 2: Design your project
  3. Step 3: Upload your file & order

Note: More details are available in Software Help.

The Momento Software

How do I create a photobook design?

You can use Momento Pro's free design software or your preferred design software with Momento Pro's PDF specifications.  Should you choose to use the Momento Pro software, we recommend you read the Software Help for full details about the software features and functionality.  You will find it an invaluable resource.

Can I submit a file created in other design software?

Yes. As a member of Momento Pro, you can create your design in the Momento Pro software or your preferred graphics software i.e. Photoshop, InDesign, PhotoJunction or other packages.  You must supply your finished file for printing by Momento Pro as a PDF. to our specifications. For further information, log in and visit our Resources page.

How does the Auto-Enhance tool work?

The Auto-Enhance tool analyses the digital data for your selected photo or photos and adjusts the colour, contrast, sharpness and brightness, with the aim of improving the printed product.  If a group of photos is selected, the adjusted settings will be averaged to suit the whole group rather than each individual image.

You can make the Auto-Enhance a default setting so that it is automatically applied to all images in a project, but if colour is of major concern, we suggest you apply the tool to individual images, carefully assessing the affect on each image before approving the adjustment.  Remember that as an automated tool Auto-Enhance may not produce the desired affect on all images, especially dark, over-exposed, scanned or sepia images.

The Auto-Enhance tool is designed for maximum performance on unaltered images so if you have adjusted your images in non-Momento Pro software, the Auto-Enhance tool may produce a negative colour effects.

Can Momento Pro files be printed elsewhere?

No. Files generated by the Momento Pro software can only be printed by Momento Pro.

Can I use the Momento Pro software on my Mac?

Yes! We now have Momento for the Mac. The Mac version of the software includes all the same features and functionality as the Windows version and is now available on the Downloads page.

Do I need to design my pages differently for Lay-flat pages?

No, if you use the Momento Pro software and choose Lay-flat Photobook when starting your project. The software automatically allows for a smaller gutter.

Yes, if you use non-Momento Pro software. See PDF specifications for details on smaller gutter dimensions.

What is a Prestige binding?

Prestige binding differs to our standard binding as it uses extra thick board with bevelled edges resulting in a substantially heavier weight and thicker hardcover. Note: Prestige binding is available in Grand sizes only. There are some restrictions with suitable cover materials and they are not available with printed hardcovers or dust-jackets.

What is Prestige Mount binding?

Prestige Mount binding uses the same heavyweight hardcover of a Prestige bound photobook, but has an additional aluminium plate feature.  The design you create for your Cover is laser-printed on to an aluminium plate then inset in to Prestige hardcover. Note: Prestige and Prestige Mount are available in Grand sizes only. There are some restrictions with suitable cover materials and they are not available with printed hardcovers or dust-jackets.

How do I create a design for a Prestige Mount aluminium plate?

Design your cover with a full bleed image cover of the same shape as the book you are designing.  So if you are creating a Prestige Mount design for a Portrait book, design a full bleed Portrait page.  DO NOT create your design by centring an image in the centre of a page and surrounding it with white (or any other colour).  We use the whole page image for the aluminium plate.

What hardcover materials can I choose from?

There are over 40 cover materials that we’ve sorted in to 7 different ranges:

  • Genuine Leather:  Luxurious Moroccan leather hide
  • Deluxe:  Soft materials in classic black and rich metallics
  • Fusion:  Two-toned natural linen
  • Linen:  Neutral and vivid weaves

How can I order a Cover Material Swatch (free)?

What is a Dust-Jacket?

Dust-jackets are printed on 270gsm paper stock and finished with your choice of matte or gloss laminate.

What are Printed Hardcovers?

Your design is printed on to adhesive paper, finished with a matte or gloss laminate then wrapped around the hardcover of your book.

What is Custom Branded Software?

You can purchase a personalised version of the Momento Pro software that automatically export any project created in the software with your company logo (or other image of your choice) visible on the back cover (or other location of your choice).  For example, you can opt to have your logo always appear on the centre, base of your back cover or on the back of any greeting or promo card.

Custom Branded Software is a one off cost of $100 and for details on how to order, visit the Extras page.  You will be asked to upload your logo file in PNG format, select 1 of 9 locations for printing your logo.  We will then create your personalised software and make it available for download and installation from Your Home page.

Can I design the back cover of a Printed Hardcover or Dust-Jacket?

No, not in the Momento Pro software, although we do plan to make this feature available in the future.  If you have ordered Branded Software however, your logo will always appear on the back of your dust-jacket or printed hardcover.  To order Branded Software visit the Extras page.

Yes, if you use non-Momento Pro software with Momento Pro's cover templates and specifications, available for Photoshop and InDesign.

Preparing Content, Files & Formats

What file formats can be used in the Momento Pro software?

JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png) or TIFF (.tif) files in Adobe RGB colour space. Note: CMYK colour space is not supported.

Filing photos for use in a project

We suggest files be stored in a single folder or sub-folders. All files stored on CD, DVD or any other external device must be copied to a folder on the computer's hard disk or the software will not work efficiently, and may have problems re-opening project files.

What file format is a Momento Pro file?

There are actually four file formats associated with the Momento Pro software:

  1. MBK or Working file: the file you create and open in the software. It has a .MBK at the end of the filename i.e. Birthday.mbk
  2. MBF or Master file: the file created when you click the Export button, and you send to Momento Pro for printing i.e. Birthday MASTER.mbf
  3. PDF or Preview file: a file created during the Export process, for you to proof your design before printing i.e. Birthday PREVIEW.pdf
  4. BAK or Backup file: only required if there are issues with your MBK, please contact Momento Pro if this is the case.

The software can’t locate my photo files

This happens when photos or the book file have been moved from the folder they were stored in when you added them to your project, or if they have been stored on an external hard drive. Because you have moved the files the software can no longer find them or load them in to the software. The software will open a Browse Box for you to search and select the folder the images are now saved in. You will only need to find one image for each folder that you have moved and the software will automatically locate the rest. To avoid this issue you must copy all your photo files off CDs, DVDs, USB memory sticks and external hard drives or before you start your project.

What are the best settings for scanning printed photographs, negatives or slides?
  • File size: 2000 x 1500 pixels minimum
  • Dots per inch: 300 DPI or greater if you want to enlarge a photo or make it fill the whole page
  • File format: Save the file as a JPG with a minimum quality setting of 8
  • Colour space: Adobe RGB colour space (if this is option is available with your scanner)

Do you offer professional scanning services?

No, but visit the Momento Pro Service Directory to search and find scanning services in your area.

Enhancing scanned photos in Photoshop
  • Use the Despeckle or Dust & Scratches tools in the Filter > Noise menu to remove dust visible in the scan
  • Use the Brightness/Contrast tool in the Enhance menu to lighten or darken your image
  • Use the Red Eye Brush tool in the Tools bar to remove red eyes

Designing a Project

Can Momento Pro design my project for me?

Momento Pro does not have a design service but we do have a Service Directory listing other professionals who can assist you with design, scanning, retouching and other services, at an additional charge. Their charges will vary depending on your requirements.  Please visit Software Help for all the information you need to know about designing your project.

How can I find someone to do the design for me?

Visit the Momento Pro Service Directory to find a list of professionals who can help with your design.  Or to become a member of the Service Directory click here.

How many photos can I include on a page?

We limit the number of photos per page to 24 photos to ensure that the Momento Pro software runs efficiently.

Can I change the shape of my project midway through design?

No. You can not change a project from a Square to Landscape orientation midway through your design. In order to change the shape of your project you need to start a new project.

Can I change the size of my project midway through design?

Yes. You can change the size your project by following these steps:

  • Go to the Page Menu at the top of the screen
  • Select Size
  • Select the size you wish to use (Grand, Regular, Small)

Note: You will need to re-export this file for this to create a new MBF in your preferred size.

Can I join two Projects together?

No. Currently there is no way to convert two separate projects in to a single project, but we’ll keep working on it!

Does the first page of my design appear on the left or right page of my photobook?

The first page you design in the Momento Pro software will print on to the first right hand page in your photobook or diary. To its left will be a blank white page. The first double page spread will show Page 2 on the left and Page 3 on the right.

Can I work on a Project with someone working on another computer?

Yes, but it can be bit tricky and time-consuming and only one of you will be able to work on this file at a time! The easiest way is to have them send you their photos and text so you can add them to the project. Alternatively you will need to copy the project file and all related photo files to your friend’s computer using exactly the same folders and file structure you used on your computer, and vice versa if they send it back to you for editing. You can preview each other's work by emailing the PDF Preview or by using the Send To Friend tool to view the Online Preview.

Copyright

What content can I include in my design?

You can only include photos, images, text or any other content owned or copyright cleared by you.

How do I know who owns the copyright?

Copyright in any content belongs to the person who took the photograph, the person who created the image or with the publisher who commissioned the artwork. Photographers who have signed a Publishing Agreement may need permission from the client or publishing company to include the photographs in a Momento Pro design.

Does Momento Pro own the copyright in my Momento Pro project?

Momento Pro is a printing service not a publishing company. Momento Pro does not own copyright of any files or their contents that are submitted by our customers.

Paper & Print Technology

Where are Momento Pro products made?

Momento Pro products are all printed and manufactured in our state-of-the-art production facility in Sydney. To find out all about our great production team and the environmental policy that drives our processes, visit About Us.

Can I visit a Momento Pro showroom to see the products?

Yes, we have a showroom where you can see, touch and experience all our products first-hand.  The showroom is only open for scheduled appointments so please contact our friendly customer service team to arrange a suitable time.

What printer do you use?

We use a HP Indigo 5500 digital offset printer to print all our photobook, diary and calendar pages, our greeting cards, plus the covers for our spiral books and diaries. HP Indigo printers are currently the international benchmark for printing photobooks and other photo products. Momento Pro’s HP Indigo print operator is the most experienced in the country.

How do you ensure premium print quality?

Momento Pro uses high quality digital offset print technology rather than traditional photographic printing processes. Digital offset printing combines the best of traditional photographic print processes, traditional offset book printing processes and the versatility of digital technology to provide high quality prints at an affordable cost. To ensure optimum print results, we run tests and maintenance checks every few hours, we print a colour swatch with every print, and run every print by our quality assurance team.

What do you use for printing dust-jackets?

We print all our covers and dust-jackets on high quality, wide format inkjet printers, on to premium photo satin stock.

Do you use archival paper?

Momento Pro products are digitally printed on to high quality paper stocks that are rated as archival according to standard ISO-9706. The paper manufacturers estimate a lifetime of 105 years. We warrant no responsibility for the longevity of your Momento Pro photobook but recommend you store it in a dry place out of direct or ultraviolet light and avoid bending the cover beyond its natural limits.  We also provide Care Instructions with every order to ensure you enjoy your Momento Pro product for many years to come.

Is the paper environmentally friendly?

Momento Pro uses paper sourced from FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified sources. Please see our Environmental Policy here.

Do you use archival inks?

The inks used are guaranteed by the supplier to not fade for 50 years when not exposed to harsh or ultra-violet light for extended periods of time.

Colour & Quality Assurance

What will the colours look like in my Momento Pro prints?

High quality colour reproduction is our primary objective and has defined our software and workflow processes. Momento Pro does not manually adjust the colours during the printing process, instead, we provide ICC colour profiles for soft-proofing and an Auto-Enhance tool in the Momento Pro software.

The colours in your Momento Pro print may differ to the colours you see onscreen if the monitor is not calibrated.  It is common for the colour and contrast settings of a computer monitor to change over time therefore we cannot guarantee that the colour and contrast you see in your Momento Pro file onscreen will be exactly the same as your printed version. To ensure colour accuracy we recommend you calibrate your monitor regularly, and install the Momento Pro colour profiles so you can soft-proof your files in Photoshop prior to submission

The colour in your Momento Pro print may differ from the colour in a photographic print of the same image because photo labs can manually adjust colour and contrast settings during their printing process. We do not manually adjust any image.

How do I ensure my screen view is the same as the printed product?

1. Calibrate your monitor regularly
2. Be aware of what colour space you are working in and always “embed profile” when saving your images. We recommend working in AdobeRGB (1998).
3. Soft proof your images using our ICC printer profiles so that you are familiar with the effect of the printer and the specific paper stock on your images and can edit accordingly where necessary.

How can I access Momento Pro's ICC colour profiles for soft-proofing?

ICC profiles and colour management are a complex topic. Please visit the Colour Management page for details.

Do you check all prints?

Yes.  Every print and page undergoes quality assurance review by our experienced QA staff before moving through for binding or finishing. The finished product also undergoes strict quality assurance checks to ensure that no damage was experienced in the manufacturing process.

Do you edit or proof our files?

No. We do not check files for typographical, alignment or any other design errors. Files are only checked for Momento Pro generated print or manufacturing issues. You must proof your file prior to submission.  See Cancellation Policy for more details.
